The Technisch Fysische Vereniging 'Professor Francken' is the study association for Engineering Physics, connected to the University of Groningen. It was founded in 1984 and is named after Groningen’s first professor of Applied Physics.
Despite its technical focus, the association welcomes students studying (Applied) Physics, (Applied) Mathematics, and Astronomy, as well as from other studies within the faculty of Science and Engineering. It is a collective of both Dutch and international students, from first-year students to PhDs. For internationals, it’s the perfect place to integrate with Dutch students; for Dutchies, it’s a great time to socialise with students from other cultures.
The association holds a variety of activities for all members throughout the year, beginning with an introductory camp for first year students, and finishing the academic year with the summer BBQ. In the months between, Francken organises plenty of borrels, lecture talks, and Buixie - a week-long trip to a European destination filled with visits to companies and universities, and the opportunity to explore the city. Some highlights of the year include Jam Night, the Beach Party, and the infamous Tour de Francken. Excursions to companies such as ASML and Nepad are open to members, as well as the opportunity to apply for Expedition Strategy.
As a member of Francken, there are plenty of committees to join, ranging from Francken Vrij, the editorial committee of the association’s magazine, to Fraccie, the committee in charge of organising fun activities to help members make it through the year.
Between lectures, members grab a cup of coffee or a game of klaverjas in the Franckenkamer. It’s the perfect place to study, grab a snack, or enjoy a nice cold beer with your fellow mooie gekken.
